Quality things…and motivation
I love really nice things. I don’t have too many of them, but I’m a TOTAL sucker for them. I have a strong appreciation for industrial design. I think that’s why I’m such a big Apple fan..they just make beautiful gear. You know that feeling when you just hold something in your hand and you can just feel that it exudes ‘quality’? I like that.
Case in point? Rolex. Except not in my hand, sadly. I stumbled across their website the other day and was totally blown away. Firstly, the site is just stunning. It’s all done in Flash (of course), but if there was ever a site that represented the product in a spot-on way, THIS has got to be it. Take a look and see what I mean.
One day I will own a Rolex. Not because I’m pretentious!, but because it’s a superb, quality thing and I’ve always wanted one of the world’s best timepieces wrapped around my wrist. Not one of the ridiculous glitzy, diamond and gold encrusted numbers (sorry, Rolex), but a clean, ’simple’, stainless-steel classic, like the GMT Master II (pictured).
The motivation part…? While currently, laying down $5-10,000 on a watch is not high on my priority list, it’s something I aspire to. Maybe you do too? Go visit Rolex, marvel at the gorgeous site design and then grab yourself one of their delicious screensavers from the Downloads area (available for both Mac and Windows) to keep you focussed on your goals and also to simply ogle at these beautiful things…

I have to disagree. IMHO Tag and Omega while in their own class and are nice watches, are in a class apart from Rolex and 50+ for a Rolex, really? I think ‘younger’ guys like you and could pull off some of the stainless steel models. I’ll let you know how well I’m received when I get my first one! ;-)
I am 29 and just purchased my first (and last) Rolex. I shopped around for years, and wanted something to last the rest of my life. I have looked at everything and came to one conclusion - Rolex Submariner 16610.
Reasons:
1. Quality is the best
2. Timeless design - it will be in style in 50yrs, whether on the beach, or in a tux.
3. I like the idea of having something permanent with me. For when I get married, buy my first house - all of life’s events, I own a sense of permanency with this purchase as it will be there through all of it.
4. Marked the graduation of my medical degree.
My father got a watch from his parents (Seiko) when he graduated university. It lasted him 30yrs. They have long past and the watch has been outdated and broken. I think he would have liked to have it still around…the Rolex will be.
In my opinion, if you can afford one - get it and don’t worry about it. I don’t see them as very expensive if you think you’re going to wear it for 50+ years - that’s less that $100/yr to own a Rolex. How many other wristwatches will you own if you spend $2000 on an Omega, then $2000 on something else 10yrs later. More than that, and it may sound really corny, there is a sense of companionship with owning something that will endure your life - nostalgic of the past - and eager of the future - something your children can cherish - that is priceless to me.
Just my input, but albeit expensive - worth every penny.

I must say that as nice and lovely the Rolex can be - I feel that their market is age 50+ :P
I find a Tag or Omega much more appealing for guys our age?
What do you think?
